At Santa Fe Goldworks, we pride ourselves on crafting custom, inlay gold jewelry adorned with diamonds, Sleeping Beauty turquoise, lapis and Australian Opals (to name a few). While many of our designs are born out of the imaginations of the expert jewelers, many of our pieces are rich with the symbolism of our land.
David Griego, owner and designer of Santa Fe Goldworks, is locally born and raised. He established the store in 1972 and has been crafting fine, wearable art for over 40 years. He has mastered the craft of commemorating the Land of Enchantment in beautiful ways, and perhaps the most well-known and beloved outpouring of his loyalty to the land is his Zia series.
The Zia series is comprised of pendants, rings and stud earrings – each with the Zia symbol as the eye-catching focal point. This series is marked by the bright hues of Mediterranean Coral, Spider Web Turquoise, Australian blue-green Opal, and much more; and while the colors are striking, the symbol upon which they lay is equally mesmerizing.
The Zia symbol comes from the Zia Sun – a sacred emblem to the Zia Indians of New Mexico. The red circle with four groups of protruding rays is often “painted on ceremonial vases, drawn on the ground around campfires, and used to introduce newborns to the Sun. Four is the sacred number of the Zia and can be found repeated in the four points radiating from the circle.” (Source)
The number four is significant in many ways:
- The compass has four points
- The year has four seasons
- Each day has four periods (morning, noon, evening and night)
- Life has four segments (childhood, youth, middle years and old age)
- And, according to the Zia, one must develop four sacred attributes: devotion to the wellbeing of others, a strong body, a clean spirit and a clear mind
When we craft our jewelry, we not only strive to create beautiful pieces to be passed down from generation to generation, but we also seek to gift the wearer with something meaningful – something that transcends beauty. Our Zia series does just that. When one adorns him or herself with the symbolism of the Zia Sun, he or she becomes a part of the rich heritage of our land, our people.
The Zia symbol is the most notable emblem of our fine state and it represents who we are and who we strive to be. Take a look at our Zia series.
